As such, it's become much easier for businesses and individuals to create and distribute their images, artwork, and products quickly. Additionally, the quality of these reproductions is often excellent, allowing for vibrant and detailed results. However, memes are notorious for being funny due to their low quality and sometimes offensive subject matter.
Reproductions of images, such as photographs and memes in digital media, have had a huge impact on society. According to John Berger, a British art critic and writer, reproductions of images have shaped our lives in ways that many of us may not even realize. Reproductions have changed how we communicate, how we access information, and how we interact with each other. They have enabled us to share information quickly and easily, to create new forms of art, and to build new types of relationships. Reproductions of images are an important part of our lives, and their influence should not be underestimated.

For example, in searching for one of the related keywords, unicorn puke, we received about 350,000 additional Google results. There is something in rainbow puke that many people relate to.
Let’s look deeper with one version, the Snap Chat filter that turned faces into puking rainbows. Yes, that’s my face with the glasses above the image. Does the meaning of the meme stay consistent in this all these automated images? This multiplicity of images illustrates its power. Images can grow in number and influence, seemingly all on their own.
Where does the power of influence come from?
The power of influence comes from within. It is the ability to use your personal attributes, such as knowledge, charisma, and confidence, to influence and motivate others. This power is often acquired through experience, self-awareness, and the development of strong interpersonal skills. However, one's ability to influence others can also be enhanced by the environment in which they operate, as well as their relationships with those around them. Ultimately, the power of influence comes from within each individual and is shaped by their world. Does a meme influence, do people influence, or is it both? What happens if we remove the people from the process?
In the book, All Consuming Images: The Politics Of Style In Contemporary Culture, Ewen discusses the mechanical reproduction of desirable styles as a valid concern. While the accessibility of certain styles has become much more democratic, it could be argued that the quality of the styles has suffered as a result. As such, it can be argued that to maintain the quality of the styles, it may be necessary to limit the scope of the mechanical reproduction of these styles. However, it is also important to recognize that democratization can be beneficial in other ways, such as allowing people of all backgrounds and economic levels to express themselves. To ensure the quality of the styles while also allowing for equitable dissemination of the styles, it may be necessary to find a balance between the two. This is especially true now that AI is sourcing content across the internet.
The original rainbow puke meme
It all started with this blogger’s post, so the first meme was this text:
The packaging on Japanese snacks is probably some of the most colorful stuff you'll ever see . . . In all seriousness, it looks like a rainbow threw-up all over their snack section and forever stained the packages with a million bright colors.

The definition of a meme is similar to the definition of an archetype. Archetype is a psychological term that refers to an image and a behavior pattern. In this theory, the puking rainbow image is not just a picture. It is also a pattern of behavior. What behavior pattern is associated with rainbow puke? I do not think it is vital to agree on a single interpretation, but I will share my thoughts on the power of a meme.
I rainbow puking a rainbow is a pattern of infinite compulsive repetition. Imagine a mirror reflecting a mirror into infinity. But the original meme has expanded into anything throwing up rainbows. Variations include changes in the word throwing up to puke and vomit. This meme analysis demonstrates the distortion of the meaning behind the original image over time and with mechanical reproduction. While we might seek power and influence, the also meme represents the opposite in that it is also an unconscious and compulsive behavior or repetition or copying.
Making an original image, balancing the scales
To balance out the repetition, I created a new image. It is also said that art practice is a form of research. Over time and with creative engagement, I got a deeper understanding of the meme phenomenon. My version of the meme is titled Rainbow Bird, as seen in Figure 2. Its form is 11 x 22 inches and made with mixed media on stretched canvas. It features a glittery cartoon bird on the left-hand side, spewing a prism-shaped glittery rainbow across the right two-thirds of the canvas. The background is stripes, like abstracted grass, with a thin rainbow thread that crosses over the top of the main one and circles around the back. You see a photographic form and not a painting in this paper.
How to interpret a new image
There are different ways of interpreting images. One theory is to focus on the icons (Howells & Negreiros, 2012). One icon is the bird, associated with many things like a free spirit. Another is the rainbow, associated with myths like Noah’s Ark. Birds sing to communicate. The bird in my image looks like it is singing a rainbow rather than puking. Laughter, like puke, is normally an involuntary bodily function that can be violent and uncontrollable. Singing is almost the opposite; it is a form of communication that requires self-control and is often very soft.
As an artist, creative languages are a priority in my life. I mix colors all the time, and the perception of color can change a lot depending on what it is next to. In Gestalt theory, objects placed near each other form relationships in the mind (Zakia, 2013). In my image, the alignment of the rainbow, centered horizontally to the bird, and in connection relates the element’s spirit, light, sound, and communication. I gave this painting to my mother because it reminded me of how she is a powerful advocate for creating joyful life experiences, especially for me in my childhood.
Lessons Learned from a Rainbow Puke Meme Analysis
In conclusion, the superficial visual similarities of a meme are easy to spot, but the behavior patterns and personal associations take work to perceive. Not all rainbow puke images are equal. It takes careful observation and thoughtful reflection, leveraging appropriate visual theories, to read each unique picture. Personally, by engaging creatively with the image I was able to gain deeper insight into my identity, perspective, and beliefs about the world.
I faced challenges in learning to use my voice and advocate for myself. It took tremendous effort to discover my power of influence. The power of influence comes from within. It is the ability to use your personal attributes, such as knowledge, charisma, and confidence, to influence and motivate others. This power is often acquired through experience, self-awareness, and the development of strong interpersonal skills.
